Method Statement
We outline our approach to managing the construction works for cherished clients.
-
1 Site Organization
This section outlines the key elements for consideration. This document demonstrates our commitment to manage, control, and where possible mitigate our impact on the local community and infrastructure. Abeikumah Construction Limited has a commitment to conservation and environmental protection. The construction methods will be carefully developed to mitigate adverse environmental effects using best practice techniques which include, Mobilization to site, Site camp establishment, Construction and health and safety measures.
-
2 Scaffolding
Scaffolding is a temporary structure to support the original structure as well as workmen used it as a platform to carry on the construction works. The main purpose for having a scaffold is to make work easier and provide a safe environment for our workers. Our scaffolds are mostly used for high-rise buildings that aid the construction of projects and these are made of steel. Our scaffolds are stable and strong to support workmen and other construction materials are placed on it. We have our own team that sets up the scaffolds. This is then inspected by the health and safety team to ensure that there is conformity. Our scaffolds aid in the construction, repair and maintenance of buildings, bridges and all other man-made structures.
-
3 Demolition
We also carry out demolition of old structures. The demolition process is highly professional. At Abeikumah construction, we follow the steps below in carrying out demolition process; .
-
4 Surveying of buildings
At Abeikumah construction, we check the perimeters of the surroundings before any demolition is done. We further consider the building and structural surveying. With the building surveying, we carry out the following processes; the type of materials used, usage of building prior and present during demolition, presence of waste water, hazardous material, flammable or explosive and radio-active materials. We also consider drainage conditions, and possible problems of water pollution, flooding and consider other adjourning buildings. Finally, we also consider whether the noise, vibrations and traffic will negatively affect the neighborhood. At Abeikumah, the structural survey is an important part that we consider. The following are the processes we follow; we consider the method of construction, the structural system and condition of basement, underground tanks, the original structural systems employed in the design and the condition of the building.
- Removal of hazardous Materials At Abeikumah, the removal of hazardous materials is done by employing the appropriate agency or specialized personnel to effect the removal of the hazardous material prior to the demolition of the structure.
- Preparation of plan We have a precise or a detailed plan we use for different processes of demolition.
- We take into consideration the location of the building to be demolished ,
- We check the surround building, the streets and structures for safety We also look at the structural support system
- We consider showing the procedure for demolition
- We have a plan for precautionary measures for the protection of the public which includes walkways, platforms, protective screens and safety nets, scaffolding and hoardings .
- We consider how to handle the demolished building debris and how to haul it form the site.
- We consider the time required for the demolishing to take place .
- Safety Measures All our workers, site supervisors, engineers and plant and equipment officers are taken through the potential hazards and the process of demolishing. Other flammable materials are removed from the site but materials that we use at the site are kept in a proper storage facility. Demolition of structure can cause many problems to workers such as exposure to dust, chemicals, heat stress and ventilation, medical and first-aid facilities, sanitation and occupational diseases. In order to overcome these situations, we have strategic measures that we undertake to protect our workers.
-
5 Underpinning
At Abeikumah, we carry out underpinning for old buildings that need to strengthen the foundations of an existing building or any other infrastructure. The processes that we go through;
- Installation of permanent or temporary support to an already strengthened foundation, to create an additional depth in order to achieve additional capacity.
- Considering the age of the structure and types of works involved.
- After excavation, professionals are tasked to examine and determine the soil capability to resist the structure to be mounted over it.
- Underpinning is considered after the report is received.
- Mass concrete underpinning method
- underpinning by cantilever middle method
- Pear and beam underpinning method
- mini piled method of underpinning
- Pre-test method of underpinning
-
6 Block Laying
We lay blocks as part of our construction of walls, foundation, columns and other structures. Before we start laying our blocks, we calculate the number of blocks required. We require that our workers lay the blocks at both ends of the structure with string lines. These lines are stretched between the ends to serve as a guide before the first course of blocks is laid. We also ensure that guide posts are used with timber board driving into the ground with markings in a straight line. We also ensure that blocks are laid in vertical joints to avoid creating a line of weakness. Once the first course of blocks has been laid, we check with our sprit level to ascertain whether the top level of the laid blocks is straight.
-
7 Plastering
Our plastering process is one of the tasks that we put a lot of effort into. We apply mortar on the surfaces of rough ceilings and walls in order to obtain even and smooth surfaces. We mostly do this to protect the surface from harmful atmospheric effects such as rain and sand and also to create decorative effects such as aesthetics. Our plastering process helps to;
- Provide a smooth and finished surface,
- Protect the surfaces against atmospheric effects ,
- Resist chemical actions
- Cover defects in the structure and to Give a decorative appearance.
-
8 Health and Safety
Our health and safety procedures for work in excavations and poor ground conditions will be controlled through risk assessments and method statements appropriate to the specific situation and will be in accordance with the required approved guidance. All dust levels are to be kept to a minimum and where possible controlled at source by the use of dust suppression systems. Site operatives are to wear suitable PPE/RPE where the levels of dust cannot be controlled ensuring exposure is well within legal limits. o Site Security
- At Abeikumah, visitors will be requested to identify themselves, or they will not be allowed on site until a member of staff has greeted them.
- All other entrances and exits to the site will remain secured at all times.
- Security and staff make regular inspections of the site boundary to ensure that no suspected packages have been left .
- The Site Manager is responsible for ensuring the site is secure at the end of each working day, including the removal or locking down of any access ladders/stairs to scaffolding and the gantry areas.
-
9 Training for People on Site
Prior to any staff commencing work on site, they will receive Health and Safety Induction Training. Abeikumah Construction Limited conducts training for all employees under their control and for management/supervisors who are thereafter required to induct their workforce. These training sessions helps to avoid accidents on site. Some of the training sections include the following;
- Excavation and trenching

- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) training
-
10 Welfare Facilities
Welfare arrangements for our projects are as follows:
- Mess room
- water
- Washing facilities
- Toilets
- First Aid
- Traffic Control
-
11 Site Waste Management Plan
A specific area is laid out and labeled to facilitate the separation of materials for potential recycling, salvage, reuse and return. Recycling and waste bins are to be kept clean and clearly marked in order to avoid contamination of materials. The labeling systems should be placed according to the Waste Awareness Color Coding Scheme. If the skips are clearly identified the bulk of the workforce will deposit the correct materials into the correct skip. Skips for segregation of waste identified currently are:
- Wood
- Metal
- Brick/rubble
- Canteen waste
